R&D Announces Plans for the Year Ahead!

E-mail Print PDF

The Department of R&D has announced its plans for the next year!

New classes

I think we're probably good with those for a while, we’ve had a lot of new classes over the last year, notably the Vikrant, Century and Sunbird, we’ve one more class in the works, the Selous class, which has been graphically designed by one of our own here in Obsidian Fleet and as a result we’re really excited about this class, which also represents a new step in Federation design philosophy.

Apart from that, R&D is at the moment, not looking at any more playable Starship classes, although as always we will be continuing to design non-playable starship classes for reference purposes, focusing in on Foreign Powers and Civilian vessels, as we have done throughout this year.

Fighters

I'm going to take a look over the fighters, whittle them down and rearrange into 3 Fighters and a Fighter Bomber, with an Interceptor (Probably the Razor), "Strike Fighter" (Raptor), Fighter / Bomber (Broadsword) and a Heavy Fighter (Valkyrie) with perhaps the Peregrine staying in as a kind of Torpedo Bomber for Starbases and Carriers, this'll probably need a re-jig of most fighter complements to go with them and will see most fighters get a stats boost, however this is in an embryonic stage at the moment and of course any input for these changes will be welcomed.

Starbases

I'm also looking into the possibility of having a Deep Range Starbase, with a more Science / Colonisation outlook than we have at present, sort of a DS9 type base, so it'll likely have a significant civilian section, good strong defensive capabilities and excellent Science facilities as well as Storage. We'll also look at giving Starbases the ability to add external "structures" to their complement, like Drydocks, Storage facilities and even shipyards and probably give the Wallace a bit of a tune up too.

Wiki

I'm planning to, with the help of Fleet Corps put together a team of people (ideally somewhere between 5-10) who'll help me expand the Tech articles on the wiki, notably the Tools section, which is a little light on details in many areas and work on Starship internals, using our deck listings as a guide to create "Room descriptions" for the function and capabilities of many rooms not seen on screen. This will serve as a reference point for curious simmers and hopefully serve to enhance everyone’s simming experience.

In line with that, if anyone out there would like to help out the Department in any way, with the wiki, then that help would be most appreciated and even if you've never edited a wiki before, we'll provide training and help that'll get you up to speed in no time whatsoever, all you need is to be enthusiastic! So if you're interested in helping out in the wiki, then drop me an email, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it is, as always, where you can find me!

And of course, if you think there's something here that I've missed that needs R&D's loving attention, then let me know!

Thanks for reading and happy simming!

Crew Breakdown Guides now avaliable!

E-mail Print PDF

Have you ever wondered how many people the Security department has? Or Science? Well, wonder no more!

After months of hard work on our part and working carefully to balance each class, the Department of R&D feels confident to announce that we can now provide any CO or player who wants it a rough guide to how the crew on each and every starship class OF has!

It should be noted that these are only guides and not compulsory, but we think they might help you guys out and hence, they've been developed! Starbases will be coming soon, so watch this space!

So, if you want to get your hands on these, then send in a mail to tech[at]obsidianfleet[dot]net today!

New Wyvern Variants Released!

E-mail Print PDF

The Department of R&D is happy to announce a trial experiment within OF, interchangeable Auxiliary classes! In this case, the Wyvern, Naga and Seacole Variants. The first is the Seacole Medical Hopper, which is a Wyvern with different insides and tailored for casevac. The Seacole is really designed for usage on the Olympic class, but will likely be useful for a wide range of ships in a non-combat role!

The other is a part of an attempt to build up a better combined arms (based on air units) ability for the Marines and intended for use with a couple of upcoming Marine Expeditionary Unit Pods for the Nebula and for another class in production, but this Gunship variant will be available to all other CO's as well. It's been tailored to carry armaments which aren't particularly dangerous to fighters or starships, but should be lethal to ground forces. In essence, this is the "Vietnam War" moment when we first mounted guns on a helicopter to create the Helicopter Gunship, since the Wyvern is the Huey of the 24th Century, I figured it only apt.

Any CO's currently carrying the Wyvern class Hopper will be able to select whether they want their vessel to carry the Wyvern, Seacole or Naga variants or any combination thereof (the total variants must add up to the maximum number provided on the specifications)

For more information on these, either contact the Department R&D (tech[at]obsidianfleet[dot]net) or check out the links to the two classes specifications.

Polaron Torpedoes released!

E-mail Print PDF

The Department of R&D is proud to announce the release of the Polaron Torpedo!

Polaron torpedoes are a weapon designed to deliver a devastating pulse of Polaron particles directly into either an enemy vessel, which if still shielded, will result in a noticeable drop in Shield efficacy or if a ship is unshielded, will disable a ship's systems at random. Whilst not particularly physically damaging and with just two isotons of explosive force (equivalent to a 22nd century Spatial charge), the shield damage and system interference of a Polaron Torpedo make it an invaluable weapon and a key part of the Federation's ship based defence systems.

The system disruption effect is however fairly unstable, for example if you were to fire one at a ships impulse engine, then the pulse could affect any systems within the engine or in a cone spreading out throughout the entire ship, causing anything from a replicator to go offline to a warp core breach. This unpredictable nature of the polaron particles after the torpedoes detonation due to the spread pattern of the torpedo as well as the unpredictable nature of the particles themselves. The Polaron Torpedo should therefore be utilised only with extreme care in all circumstances.
